How to track Category & Sub-Category BSR for any product in just a few clicks on SellerApp

How to track Category & Sub-Category BSR for any product in just a few clicks on SellerApp

Estimated reading: 5 minutes

Are you still trying to understand how your product ranks not just in its broad category but also in its specific niche? Well, you already know the challenge. The data exists, but seeing both levels of ranking in one place for your products and your competitors’ hasn’t been easy. Well, you can expect that to change.

SellerApp’s Category & Sub-Category BSR Intelligence lets you track ranking at both levels directly from the Product Trends Graph. Just navigate to your product and analyze.

What Is Category & Sub-Category BSR Intelligence?

BSR, or Best Seller Rank, tells you how well a product is selling relative to others in the same category.

Once you track a product, your own or a competitor’s ASIN, SellerApp displays both the broad parent category rank and the specific subcategory rank inside the Product Trends Graph, alongside price, revenue, estimated orders, and sellers.

For example, a whey protein product may rank #1,842 in Health & Household but #37 in Whey Protein Powders, revealing strong niche dominance that a broad category rank alone would miss. This helps sellers uncover niche-level demand, identify easier ranking opportunities, and benchmark competitors with far more context than a single BSR metric alone.

So when you track both together, you get the full picture.

This data is available inside the Product Trends Graph alongside price, revenue, estimated orders, and sellers, all in one view.

Why Category & Sub-Category BSR Tracking Matters to Sellers

Most sellers run into the same problem:

  • A single BSR number isn’t enough: The parent category rank alone doesn’t tell you where you’re actually winning or losing.
  • Sub-category opportunities get missed: Strong sub-category performance signals niche demand that can be capitalized on before competitors catch on.
  • Competitor blind spots: Without tracking competitor ASINs, you’re optimizing without knowing where they truly stand.
  • BSR shifts go unnoticed: Ranking changes happen in real time, but without a trend view, you only see where you are, not where you’re heading.
  • New product development: Launching into a category without understanding BSR trends across sub-categories means you’re guessing at demand instead of validating it before you invest.
  • Post-launch product tracking: Without a consistent view of how your new product’s BSR moves over time, you can’t tell whether your launch strategy is working or where to course-correct.

Category & Sub-Category BSR Intelligence solves all of this in just a few clicks.

How to Use Category & Sub-Category BSR Intelligence

Step 1: Go to Product Intelligence

From your SellerApp dashboard, navigate to Product Intelligence in the left panel. This is where all your tracked products and competitor ASINs live.

Step 2: Select Track Product

Enter the ASIN or Amazon product URL of the product you want to analyze in the search bar and click Track Product. You can also use Track Bulk Products to add multiple ASINs at once.

Step 3: Identify the product type

Once the product is tracked, you’ll be prompted to provide more information to SellerApp. Select whether this is My Products or a Competitor’s Product. You’ll also be asked what you’d like to start with. Choose from options like finding converting keywords, tracking estimated sales and revenue, checking organic position for top keywords, or checking indexing of competitor keywords, depending on your goal.

Step 4: Open the Overview tab

Once on the product detail page, make sure you’re on the Overview tab using the navigation bar at the top.

Step 5: Navigate to Product Trends Graph

Scroll down to the Product Trends Graph. This is where your BSR data is displayed alongside other key metrics such as price, revenue, estimated orders, and sellers.

What are the benefits of Category & Sub-Category BSR tracking?

  1. Spot easy wins

Seeing both BSR levels together reveals products that are dominant in a sub-category but have room to grow in the broader category. These are your easiest opportunities to further improve ranking with targeted keywords and pricing adjustments.

  1. See real demand

BSR is a direct reflection of sales velocity. Tracking it over time alongside Estimated Orders and Revenue helps you separate genuine demand spikes from one-off promotions and build a strategy around what’s actually working.

  1. Benchmark competitors accurately

Because Product Keywords works on tracked ASINs, you can monitor how competitor rankings shift across both category and subcategory levels over time. Use this to anticipate their moves and stay ahead.

  1. Understand your market before you move

Tracking BSR trends across a category gives you a clear picture of where demand is growing, where it’s saturating, and which subcategories are underserved. This is the market intelligence that should be informing every strategic decision you make.

  1. Validate new product ideas with real data

Before committing to a new product, use BSR trends to assess whether demand in a subcategory is consistent or seasonal, rising or declining. Instead of relying on gut feel, you’re launching with evidence that the opportunity is real and the timing is right.

  1. Track new product performance from day one

Once a new product is live, BSR is one of the fastest signals you have. Tracking both category and subcategory rank from launch tells you immediately whether your listing is gaining traction, where you’re gaining it, and what needs to change if it isn’t moving in the right direction.

Ready to Get Started?

SellerApp’s Category & Sub-Category BSR Intelligence is built to give sellers and agencies the kind of multi-level ranking visibility that was previously difficult to access in one place. Now it’s just a few clicks away.
